In the book, Ping is described as a young girl that has dark brown hair. When Ping was very young, her parents sold her to Master Lan, as they did not have enough money to take care of her. At first she regards them as rather useless animals, but later on begins to feel their power and significance. Her job was to take care of the last imperial dragons in the Han Empire.
